Summit -85ºC Ultra Low Chest Freezer Description:
Accucold introduces a new series of ultra low temperature chest freezers designed for reliable storage at -85ºC for laboratory, life science, and other institutional settings.
Manufactured for Accucold in Denmark by ELCOLD, Summit LAB8 3.08 Cu.Ft. -85ºC Ultra Low Chest Freezer offers 3.08 cu.ft. of storage. Extra thick 4 1/2″ insulation and static manual defrost operation help to hold ultra low temperatures suitable for maintaining the integrity of biological samples, industrial materials, laboratory specimens, select vaccines, and other materials with highly specific cold storage requirements. Two inner lids offer added protection by shielding contents when the outer lid is opened. The digital microprocessor controls are mounted in the front for convenient access. This unit has a temperature range that can be set between -50 and -85ºC, with a display viewable in Celsius or Fahrenheit. The thermostat’s high/low temperature alarm warns if the interior goes out of the set range. There is also an audible 9V battery-powered alarm in the rear of the unit that will sound in the event of power failure.
We include a set of casters (two locking) for easy installation to ensure smooth mobility. The easy-grip handle is equipped with a factory-installed keyed lock for added security. We also offer this unit with a set of 6 vertical stainless steel box racks (see model LAB8R6).
The LAB8 is UL listed for use in the US and Canada, and also meets ANSI/NSF-7. For additional low temperature choices, browse the complete Accucold lineup.

Product FAQ
What is the LAB8 and what is it designed for?
The LAB8 is an ultra-low-temperature chest freezer with approximately 87 L (≈ 3.08 cu ft) capacity and external dimensions around 92 cm H × 60 cm W × 71 cm D.
It is engineered for laboratory, life-science, or clinical applications requiring stability down to approximately −85 °C, for biological samples, certain vaccines, DNA/RNA materials or high-sensitivity storage.
What temperature range and control features does it support?
It supports a temperature range from approximately −50 °C to −85 °C, controlled by a digital microprocessor thermostat with external display (°C/°F selectable).
Includes dual inner lids, thick insulation (~11 cm or more) and a buffered probe to reflect stored-product temperature accurately.
What alarms, monitoring and security features are included?
Built-in features include audible and visual high/low-temperature alarms, power-failure alarm, factory installed keyed lock for security, and front-mounted digital controls.
Caster wheels (front two locking) facilitate repositioning during cleaning or service access.
What construction and usability features support its application?
Construction includes extra-thick insulation, D-shaped cooling pipes along inner walls, manual-defrost system, counter-balanced lift-up lid, steel interior and exterior, and sealed-back design for better hygiene and easier clean-out.
Shipping FAQ
What are the exterior dimensions and shipping weight?
Approximate external size: ~92 cm H × ~60 cm W × ~71 cm D (≈ 36.25″ × 23.75″ × 28.0″); shipping weight around ~56 kg (≈ 124 lb).
What electrical and installation requirements apply?
Operates on 115 V AC / 60 Hz, with a draw around 6.0 amps. Requires a dedicated grounded outlet, stable level surface, and sufficient clearance around lid-swing and ventilation.
What steps should be taken during unpacking and placement?
Inspect the unit on delivery for any visible damage; if it was transported on its side allow it to stand upright for several hours before powering; ensure the cabinet is level; maintain clearance around lid (~90° open) and ventilation; test the digital controller and alarm functions before loading contents.
What delivery method is typical for this model?
Because this is a specialised ultra-low-temperature laboratory freezer, it typically ships via palletized freight. Ensure clear receiving access, stable staging area and level installation surface ahead of delivery.
Application FAQ
Is this unit suitable for ultra-low vaccine, sample or biobank storage?
Yes — the LAB8 is capable of ultra-low storage down to roughly −85 °C, includes precision monitoring, alarm and security features appropriate for life-science, biobank or select vaccine-storage use where extremely low temperature is required.
What daily best practices should be followed?
Use a calibrated data logger placed mid-height inside the chamber; label and rotate stored specimens or inventory; avoid over-packing which may impede lid closing or airflow; minimize lid-open time to preserve temperature; record daily min/max temperature events and alarm logs.
What routine maintenance is recommended?
Clean condenser and ventilation surfaces at least twice a year; verify alarm, probe and thermostat annually or per facility schedule; inspect lid-seal gasket annually; ensure the unit remains level and casters are locked for stable positioning.
What should be done in the event of a temperature excursion or alarm?
Document the incident including time, temperature deviation and affected contents; relocate items to appropriate backup storage if required; identify and correct the root cause (lid not closed, power fault, insufficient insulation recovery); ensure the unit returns to target temperature before resuming normal storage and log corrective actions as per facility protocol.
